The monument, located on Martyrs' Hill in the Kanlısırt area of the Arıburnu region, takes its name from a single pine tree on the hill. The cemetery contains the remains of 1167 soldiers, 668 whose identities have been confirmed and 499 whose identities remain unidentified, most of whom were Australian. Lone Pine Cemetery is the largest Australian cemetery and the only Australian monument in Gallipoli.
