Initially, a storage facility was established and artifacts unearthed during excavations and collected from the neighbourhood were brought here. In 1964, the southern section of the current museum building was finished and the first exhibitions were opened to visits. Since the museum building consisting of a few halls proved to be insufficient for displaying artifacts coming from excavations, it was expanded with the construction of the northern section in 1976. The museum has two main sections, namely the archaeological section and the ethnographic section (arasta).
