Located 37 kilometers from the city center of Batman, the historical site of Hasankeyf was once one of the region's important centers of learning and culture. However, over time, it lost its former importance due to changes in transportation routes and trade centers. The city was declared an Archaeological Site in 1978 and 1981 and placed under protection. Today, the majority of the historical structures remaining in Hasankeyf are mosques and zawiyas from the Ayyubid period.
The remnants of the walls surrounding the inner citadel show traces of the Urartian period in places. The first entrance gate and the main part of the Great Palace have survived from the Roman period to the present day. From the Artukid State, which gave Hasankeyf its second identity, more remains have survived to the present day. The first section of the Great Mosque, the Tigris Bridge, a part of the Great Palace, and the systems that carried water to the citadel are among the important works of the Artukid period. The only surviving work from the Akkoyunlu period is the Zeynel Bey Tomb.
