When it had been seized by Asut King III. Salmanassar in B.C. 855, it was called Şitamrat. The Greeks had changed this name and called as Urima. The Syrian had used the names of Kal’a Rhomeyta and Hesna the Romaye. After the city had been seized by the Arabic, it had been called as Kal’at-ül Rum. When it had been seized by Byzantines in IInd century, it was then called as Romaion Koyla.
The district, that had been under the control of Hittite and Assyrian during B.C 2000, had been involved in the territories of Babylon’s in B.C. 612. Then, it had been under the control of Med’s, Persians, MacedoniaKingdom, Seleukos’, OsrhoeneKingdom, Byzantines, Sananis, Ummayad, Abbasid.
After the battle of Manzikert (1071), the Seljukians had extended up to here (1087). Then, the city had been under the control of Ummayad and Seljukians time by time. The district had been invaded by Mogul, then in 1280 Mameluke army under the commander of Beysari, had encompassed Halfeti however could not capture but they had overrun the city. In 1290, the Egyptian Army under the commander of Eşref had captured Halfeti again and had named as Kal’at-ül Muslim. The city had been annexed to Ottoman lands during the Egypt expedition of Yavuz Sultan Selim (1517).
