The Church of the Holy Sepulchre (also known as the Church of the Resurrection) is one of the most important Christian places of worship located within the old city walls of Jerusalem. Orthodox Christians call it the "Church of the Resurrection." The church is situated in the Christian Quarter of the Old City (very close to the Muristan area).
This church houses the site of Golgotha, considered by Christian belief to be the place where Jesus was crucified, and his tomb, which is believed to be his resting place. Therefore, it is extremely sacred to Christians. It has also been an important pilgrimage site since at least the 4th century, as it is believed that Jesus was resurrected here.
Today, the church does not belong to a single denomination. It is used jointly by many different Christian denominations, primarily the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. These include Catholics, Greek Orthodox, the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Syriac Orthodox Church, the Coptic Orthodox Church, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. These denominations share different parts of the church according to specific rules.
