Located southwest of the city center of Şanlıurfa, these two lakes, known as the place where Prophet Abraham fell when he was thrown into the fire, are among the most important places in Şanlıurfa with their sacred fish and the historical artifacts surrounding them.
When Prophet Abraham began to fight against the idols worshipped by the tyrannical ruler Nimrod and his people, and to defend the idea of one God, Nimrod threw him into a fire from the hill where the present-day castle stands. At that moment, God commanded the fire, "O fire, be cool and safe for Abraham." Upon this command, the fire turned into water and the wood into fish. Abraham fell safely into a rose garden. The place where Abraham fell is Lake Halil-ür Rahman. According to legend, Nimrod's daughter Zeliha, believing in Abraham, also threw herself into the fire after him. Lake Aynzeliha was formed at the place where Zeliha fell. The fish in both lakes are considered sacred by the people and are not eaten; they are protected.
