Çayönü is a mound from prehistoric periods named before as Kotaberçem (Çayboyu), existing close by Sesverenpınar (Hilar) village of Ergani town of Diyarbakir.
The dig works at Çayönü was started in 1964. The traces of transmission from hunting-collecting to agriculture had been found. There are caves with or without pictures, and traces of houses, built by employing the cave walls.
Neolithic house structures have been recognized at the settlement, dated between B.C 7250-6750. The structures with grid plan, round plan, stone based, splined, rectangular plan are interesting. Their types of usage are evaluated through a specific approach. It is the first trade center, known in the world. The well known structure of Çayonu is called as “Skull Building”. The great mother goodness worship had been carried out there.
